Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is one of the most storied plants in North American herbalism — a shade-loving woodland perennial whose bitter, golden-yellow root was held in unusually high regard by Cherokee and Iroquois practitioners and later adopted wholesale by the Eclectic physicians of the 1800s.
It is slow-growing and has been heavily wild-harvested for well over a century, which is why goldenseal now appears on conservation watch lists and why responsibly sourced root matters. Assertively bitter — most people take it in water rather than neat.
Blended and bottled in small batches at Down Home Roots Herbal, a family apothecary in Jasper, Texas. Owner Jessica Larkin holds a Practical Herbalist diploma and certifications in natural medicine, clinical aromatherapy and homeopathy, and formulates each blend herself.
A tincture is a concentrated liquid extract — botanicals steeped to draw their constituents into solution, then bottled with a dropper so you can measure by the drop. Take as directed on the label, typically in a little water.
